Happiness is...

“This blanket is a necessity. It keeps me from cracking up. It may be regarded as a spiritual tourniquet. Without it, I'd be nothing, a ship without a rudder.” -Linus

Linus Van Pelt knows all about the need for comfort, but he also knows where true comfort comes from. When Charles Schultz, a devout Christian was asked to create “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” he agreed with one precondition. The story of Jesus’ birth must be included. CBS executives, the director, and the producer tried to talk him out of including the scripture. More than 50 years later, that moment when Linus tells the story of Christmas is considered the heart of the movie.

Did you ever notice that Linus drops his blanket while he stands center stage to recite the scripture? He lets go of his security blanket just as he says “Fear not!” At that moment, Linus no longer needs his “spiritual tourniquet.” He has found comfort in the birth of Christ.

This week, we explore the comfort Christ offers us our shepherd. At the same time, we celebrate the comfort of strong women in our lives. I look forward to celebrating motherly comfort and the calming voice of our shepherd.
